After Luffy emerges victorious from the rubble of Arlong Park, he declares Nami his friend. The villagers celebrate Arlong’s defeat, but Nezumi and the Marines arrive to seize Arlong’s treasure. The Straw Hat Crew beats them, and Nami retrieves her money before giving Luffy his hat back. Nezumi then reports the Straw Hats to Marine Headquarters, and Nami and her family pay respects at Belle-mère’s grave.
With Nami’s fever worsening, Luffy and Sanji brave a treacherous mountain to reach the island’s only doctor, the “witch” Dr. Kureha. A local man named Dalton reveals that the island, which had been ruled by a tyrant named Wapol, was recently attacked by Blackbeard.
Hiriluk, having fallen into a trap set by Wapol, commits suicide with an explosive drink. Chopper, enraged by Wapol’s laughter, is stopped by a gravely injured Dalton, who begs him to leave. The flashback ends with Luffy punching Wapol in the face.
